Invasive vs. Non-Invasive BCI
- Invasive BCIs: Microscopic electrode arrays implanted directly into the motor cortex (e.g., Neuralink, Synchron). They offer ultra-high resolution signals, enabling paralyzed patients to control computer cursors, robotic arms, or type messages using thought alone.
- Non-Invasive BCIs: Wearable headsets equipped with EEG sensors. While lower resolution, they require no surgery and are used for gaming, focus monitoring, and neuro-rehabilitation.
What the Future Holds
As signal processing and neural decoding algorithms improve, BCIs promise to restore mobility to paralyzed individuals, give voice back to non-verbal patients, and eventually create seamless symbiotic interfaces between human consciousness and digital systems.
